West Virginia Road Trip
July 16th was the big day! Jaime and I left around 6:30 AM to begin our 4 hour trek to Shepherdstown. Our journey was marked with good discussion and good listening of several musicals - Hairspray had us ROFL - if you can do that in a car!
We arrived in Shepherdstown early, which allowed us time to locate the theatres where we would be seeing the shows. We ate lunch at Betty's Restaurant - which had wonderful sandwiches that were so reasonably priced! (A far cry from last week eating lunch in NYC!)
The first show we saw was Wilder, Coleen's musical. There were only three actors in the show - young Wilder, older Wilder, and Coleen - who played 3 parts - the mother, Melora, and young Melora. It was an intense 80 minutes! The acting was superb! The music was haunting and added to the intensity. Of course, Coleen was absolutely amazing!
The thing that amazed me was her ability to change her vocal timbre depending on her character - so impressive!
That evening, we saw Bright Ideas, a show that Coleen was not part of - but was so wonderful too! It was about a couple who would go to any length, and I mean any, to get their 3-year-old into the best preschool! It was so bitingly satirical that we just laughed through the whole thing! And the best part was singing happy birthday with a gun pointed at the audience!
On Thursday, we saw our final show after spending the day at Antietam Battleground. The show was The Last Schwartz. Coleen was again in this show, this time a drama. Her character though was the source of much of the comic relief and as her review stated - she became the "heart" of the show! This show was much different than the other two - at times so very serious - the audience was privy to a deep family tragedy that should have remained buried -but other times - so very very funny - so very true to life!
It was definitely worth the trip to see the wide range of acting ability that Coleen possesses. She is definitely an actor worth watching! I believe that she has a very bright future and am looking forward to seeing her in many future shows!
I also did get to meet Coleen - not once, but three different times! After Wilder, I hung out at the stage door -she was very gracious and signed my jekyll and hyde playbill - she commented that she hadn't seen one of those for a while! The 2nd day, as I waited in the lobby for the show - Coleen came in through the lobby, came right over and started talking to me! My jaw hit the floor, I'm sure! She asked about my day and hoped I would enjoy that night's show! After the show, I was at the stage door again! This time i asked to take a picture with her - and she readily agreed! She also took the time to find out what I taught and was very genuine! Another sign, at least to me, of someone who will make it far!
This trip was definitely a wonderful experience! I'm so glad i had the opportunity to go and am looking forward to my next "Coleen experience!"
Thanks Lisa for the great account of your trip!! I'm so glad you got to meet Coleen! Ok, I think that's it for this Connection! I'll talk to you all when I get home!!! :-D
Love,
Holly
